Field Report
Talica 8 on Kingfish — First Impressions
The pre-installed L.R.S. drag cam paired with oversized carbon washers delivers smooth, predictable drag pressure even pushed deep into the heavy end of the lever. Long-time Talica user here, and the new 8 has earned a spot in the rotation — compact castable lever drag, high-speed 38-inch retrieve, and a topless design that drops the silhouette low on the rod. The ergonomic power handle gives a natural throw under load and the drag lever falls right where my thumb sits. E.I. surface treatment on the cold-forged aluminum frame shrugs off the salt spray that comes with running small boats with reels in the gunnels.
Put it through its paces slow-trolling live baits over reef structure. First good bite was a kingfish in the 18-kilo class running hard for the bottom — strike drag held the fish off the foul, and pushing the lever to full sent the L.R.S. cam smooth into the heavy end without spiking. Boatside in under six minutes. The Talica 8 isn't going to replace a 16II on the biggest kings, but for live-baiting mid-class fish, it's hard to find a smoother, more castable package in this footprint.

-
What size fish is the Talica 8 built for?
Anything you'd fish a 15-50lb class rod for — yellowtail, smaller tuna and bonito on live bait, kingfish, and most reef species. The 20lb max-drag rating means you can comfortably set strike drag at 7-9lb and push toward 13-14lb full drag for fish that bury into structure. Spool it with 50lb Hollow-Ace and a fluorocarbon topshot for the most versatility.
-
Why single-speed instead of the Talica II 2-speed?
`The single-speed Talica is lighter, simpler, and less expensive than the 2-speed Talica II of the same size. For high-speed retrieve applications — jigging, live-bait drift, and most surface and mid-water tactics — a single high gear is all you need. The 2-speed is the right call when you're fishing deep, heavy jigs and want a low-gear cranking option for the lift.
-
How much drag does the Talica 8 LD have?
The Shimano Talica 8 LD delivers up to 20 lb of max drag at full and 13 lb of drag at strike. That gives it enough stopping power for a compact reel while still keeping drag pressure smooth and manageable during the fight.
-
What is the retrieve rate on the Shimano Talica 8 LD?
The Talica 8 LD retrieves 38 inches of line per turn. This fast pickup helps when a fish runs toward the boat, when you need to quickly reset a bait, or when you are fighting fast-moving offshore species.
-
What line capacity does the Talica 8 LD offer?
The Talica 8 LD has a listed mono capacity of 15 lb/280 yards, 20 lb/200 yards, and 25 lb/165 yards. For braid, it holds approximately 40 lb/395 yards, 50 lb/390 yards, and 65 lb/235 yards.
-
What species can I target with the Shimano Talica 8 LD?
The Talica 8 LD is a versatile choice for species like kingfish, mahi, sailfish, blackfin tuna, smaller yellowfin tuna, cobia, amberjack, snapper, grouper, and other fish that require a compact reel with smooth drag and strong cranking power.
