Spooling Option
Select from standard spooling options listed in the drop-down menu above, or let us know how you would like your reel spooled. Custom spooling including top-shots, wind-ons, hollow-core backing, and fluorocarbon are available. Call or send a note with your requirements and we’ll advise costs. All reels are machine spooled under ideal tension, braid is spooled with approximately 50 feet of mono backing. Wind-on leaders are offered for both hollow core and non-hollow braid, hollow core is spliced and non-hollow braid is connected loop-to-loop with a bimni twist.

You get a standard manual bail plus an included conversion kit right in the box, letting you switch your casting style whenever you want.

Can I submerge and crank this reel underwater?
Yes, you can safely submerge it. The VR series features a fully waterproof body, spool, and a patented sealed carbon fiber drag system. You can wade through breaking surf, drop it in the sand, or let it take repeated waves on a jetty without fearing gear failure.

Can I convert this reel to bailless?
Yes! The VR series comes standard as a bailed reel, but the box includes a bailess conversion kit that contains a manual dual-counterweight and a line-roller pickup guide. Converting it only takes about 5-10 minutes and requires basic tools.

Why does the reel feel tight or "heavy" to turn straight out of the box?
This stiffness is entirely normal and expected for a Van Staal reel. To achieve a 100% waterproof seal, the reel utilizes thick, heavy-duty internal rubber O-rings with packed grease seals around the main shaft and handle assembly.
This friction creates a distinct mechanical resistance when you turn the handle in a dry environment. Once you put the reel under actual load on the water and catch a few fish, the seals break in, the grease distributes evenly, and the operation smooths out noticeably.
