It features a dramatically increased line capacity due to a deeper spool, a faster high-speed gear ratio to pick up slack line over breaking surf, and a specialized drag cam designed to handle the pressure of heavy braid and long beach fights.

Can I use full-strength, heavy braided line on this spool without a mono backing?
Yes, but you must secure it properly. Because the spool is machined aluminum, smooth braid will slip around the spool hub under heavy drag pressure. You should either wrap the spool core with high-friction rubber grip tape or use a short 10-to-20-yard backing of heavy mono to lock the line in place before spooling your braid.

How much drag can this reel realistically handle, and will it warp the frame?
The Makaira LBS is engineered with a dual-force drag system that deals out up to 85–100 lbs of maximum drag (depending on the 50W or 80 model). Because the reel's body frame and sideplates are machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, the frame will not flex, twist, or warp even when fighting sharks at max drag.
