OKUMA Makaira Gold Two-Speed Lever Drag Reel

Okuma Makaira Two‑Speed Lever Drag Reel: Premium Two-Speed Big Game Lever Drag Reel

When you’re targeting billfish, giant tuna, sharks, swordfish or other ocean monsters, you need a reel that can take a pounding and keep performing. The Okuma Makaira Two-Speed Lever Drag isn’t just tough, it’s engineered for heavy-duty saltwater use with precision, durability, and power at every turn.

Built for Real Big Game Use

  • Two-Speed Gearing: Quick shifts between high and low gear give you both fast line pickup and brute-force cranking power when you’re deep or stubborn fish won’t yield.
  • Carbonite Dual Force Drag: Smooth, predictable drag that can be precisely set via the lever, which is essential for battling giant tuna or sharks.
  • Premium Construction: 6061-T6 machined aluminum frame and sideplates, 17-4 stainless gearing, and corrosion-resistant coatings keep the reel performing trip after trip in saltwater environments.
  • Ergonomic T-bar Handle & Ratcheting Clicker: Comfortable power and audible feedback when drag is applied.

Who This Reel Is For

Choose the Makaira if you:

  • Fish offshore regularly and target tuna, wahoo, marlin, amberjack, and sharks.
  • Need a reel that won’t quit under heavy drag or long fights.
  • Look for reliability and serviceability backed by Okuma’s advanced engineering and 5-year warranty.
Twin-Disk Stopping Power

Twin-Disk Stopping Power

This patented, multi-disc system applies equal pressure to both sides of the spool for maximum stability. It delivers intense stopping power (up to 100 lbs on large models) while remaining completely smooth during long, blistering runs by giant pelagic fish.
High-Torque Helical Drive

High-Torque Helical Drive

Helial Cut Gearing provides continuous fluid cranking. The uniquely angled teeth mesh progressively to deliver silent, chatter-free operation while handling massive rotational force without stripping or binding under stress.
One-Touch Shift Technology

One-Touch Shift Technology

This two-speed gearing system represents absolute tactical control. Anglers can transition instantly between a rapid-recovery gear ratio for collecting slack line and a low-speed, high-leverage winch setting to pump defeated monsters to the surface.

Before you buy

Frequently asked questions.

Still unsure? Call +1-877-337-9591. You'll talk to a builder, not a sales rep.

  • How does the reel shift between the two gear speeds?

Shifting is entirely mechanical and handled externally by a quick-change control framework on the handle shaft. To engage the ultra-low torque gear, push the button located directly in the center of the handle pivot axle. To shift back up to the high-speed recovery gear, you simply slide the release lever located just below the handle arm.

  • Why are the helical-cut gears better than traditional straight-cut gears?

Traditional gears engage one full tooth face at a time, creating small vibrations and chatter under extreme pressure. The helical design contains angled teeth that spiral slightly around the gear axis, and as they turn, the teeth mesh gradually together from one to the other. This functions to distribute massive rotational loads across a larger surface to provide smooth and silent winching power.

  • What is the main difference between the standard Gold Makaira and the Special Edition (SEa) models?

The standard Makaira Gold utilizes standard shielded bearings packed with factory grease for all-around trolling and heavy standup use. The Special Edition (SEa) models feature an open-spool bearing design treated with high-speed TSI-301 oil, which dramatically frees up the spool to boost live-bait casting distance up to 2.5 times. SEa models also feature down-shifted low gear ratios (1.3:1) on select sizes and an etched Yellowfin Tuna logo.

  • Do all Makaira reel models use the exact same dual-force drag technology?

Yes, the fundamental Carbonite Dual Force Drag architecture is standardized across the entire lineup. However, the scale changes dramatically based on model and size. The smaller models pack plenty of muscle for mid-tier offshore sportfish, while the larger wide-spool frames (like the MK-50WII and 80WII) expand the surface area of the drag washers to safely handle sustained, blistering high-heat drag pressures exceeding 60 to 100 lbs for giant bluefin tuna and marlin.
